Daventry District honours Prince Philip by ringing church bells on Saturday

Church bells have been rung in Daventry and surrounding villages on the day of Prince Philip's funeral.

Bells have been ringing out in memory of the duke, who died aged 99 on Friday, April 9.

On behalf of Daventry branch of Peterborough Diocesan Guild of Church Bellringers, Geoff Pullin, who lives in Badby, said the bells have been ringing half-muffled.

They were rung again on Saturday, the day of the duke's funeral.

He said: "The tower captain, Carole Pullin, had tolled the tenor (heaviest bell) for 30 minutes up to 3pm as part of the national mourning programme."

The duke spent seven decades in the shadow of his wife, the UK's Queen Elizabeth II - but his force of personality meant he would never be simply a professional spouse.
